In Person Graduate Celebration

In Person Graduate Celebration
Posted on 06/15/2021

Dear Class of 2021,

As commencement approaches, we have noted all of your feedback. Nepean and Nepean-OCV staff have been planning our Virtual Commencement for some time and much effort has been dedicated to this ceremony. Since the latest provincial announcement, the District has been working to quickly determine guidelines that allow each and every school to safely and equitably plan for an added in-person component. Nepean staff have now finalized in-person planning that follows these guidelines and provides you with an opportunity to mark this meaningful achievement.

How to book an in-person visit to the school:

To ensure student, family and staff safety, scheduled arrival times are spread out throughout the day of Thursday, June 24th and the morning of Friday, June 25th, in 15 minute intervals. Each graduate may register two guests to accompany them, allowing 2 family members a chance to watch you walk across the Nepean stage for a commencement photo, something Nepean graduates have not been able to do since 2004! In order to accommodate guest schedules, and the fact that many of you requested coordinating your visit with a small group of peers, each arrival time can accommodate 6 graduate bookings. If an arrival time no longer appears, it is fully booked.

Click HERE to schedule your visit anytime after 4:00pm June 15th. If you wish to change or cancel your booking, click the link at the bottom of your booking confirmation email.

When you book your visit, a confirmation message with detailed instructions and visit information appears and is emailed to you. Below are a some pertinent details to help you and your guests plan your scheduled visit:

-Parking at the school is limited and restricted to the parking lot at the rear of our building (enter from Princeton Ave.) If you have a handicapped guest, call the school to make arrangements.

-All graduates and guests sign-in and begin their visit through the front auditorium doors. Staff will be present to guide you and will ask you to enter the building only when it is safe to do so.

-All OCDSB resources (chromebooks, textbooks, library materials, etc.) are returned at sign-in so bring them with you.

-Arrive at the auditorium at your scheduled arrival time, ready for a photo in suitable commencement attire. There is no entry to the school itself, including restrooms. Guests are responsible for taking photos so be sure to charge cameras or phones!

-Upon entry to the auditorium itself, you will receive a swag bag that includes your diploma, a mortar board (cap) and a gown if one was previously purchased. You can don your cap and gown before crossing the stage, holding your diploma. A few graduates have asked to pick up their cap and gown early. See the bottom of this email for specific instructions if you would like this option. Otherwise, we will have everything ready and waiting.

-The focus of auditorium visits is on each graduate with their 1-2 guests: each graduate will enter the stage alone to pose for your photo.

-Once you have crossed the stage, you and your guests will be ushered outside to the front of the school. Access to the front of the school will be restricted to those exiting the auditorium. This is where photos of small groups of graduates and your families can be taken in designated areas. Please respect the staff outside as they ensure everyone has outdoor photo opportunities if desired. Come dressed for the weather!

-We kindly request that all groups plan their in-person visit for their scheduled 15 minute time slot. This timing allows our large graduating class a safe opportunity to cross the stage, take a photo with their diploma and pose for small group photos at the front of the school. Please arrive on time and exit the property promptly so we do not have large groups gathering or your fellow graduates queued up and waiting in the elements.

We hope that this in-person opportunity for celebration augments our formal virtual commencement ceremony, which will be available for viewing on June 25th at 1:00pm. A link will be emailed to you and your families.

You, the Nepean graduates, are a remarkable, resilient group and we couldn’t be more proud of you and your many accomplishments.

Take care and we look forward to seeing many of you on June 24th and 25th.

Christy Armstrong, Vice Principal

Balazs Fazakas, Vice Principal

Kim McLaughlin, Office Administrator
